If you've recently become pregnant, or if you're reflecting on a previous birth experience and hoping for something different this time, you may have come across the term doula. But what exactly is a doula?
At its heart, a doula is a birth companion. We provide continuous emotional, physical, spiritual, and educational support throughout pregnancy, labor, birth, and the early postpartum period. My role is to equip you and your partner with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to approach birth feeling informed, supported, and empowered.
Emotional Support
Birth is just as much an emotional experience as it is a physical one. Throughout your pregnancy and labor, I'm there to listen without judgment, validate your feelings, ease your fears, and remind you of your strength. Whether you're feeling excited, nervous, overwhelmed, or all of the above, you don't have to navigate those emotions alone. Sometimes the greatest support is simply having someone who believes in you.
Physical Support
During labor, I offer hands-on comfort measures such as counter pressure, hip squeezes, massage, and guidance with position changes to help you cope with contractions and encourage labor to progress. Every labor is unique, so we work together to find what brings you the most comfort.
I also teach your partner practical ways to support you. My goal isn't to replace them—it's to help them feel confident, involved, and connected throughout your birth experience.
Spiritual Support
Birth can be a deeply transformative experience. For many families, it is also a sacred one.
Part of my role is protecting your birth space by helping create an environment where you feel safe, respected, and able to focus inward. During our prenatal visits, we may practice mindset exercises, affirmations, breathing techniques, and guided meditations that help you connect with your inner strength and with your baby as you prepare for birth.
Education & Informed Decision-Making
One of the most important parts of my work as a doula is education.
I want you to understand what happens throughout pregnancy, labor, birth, and the immediate postpartum period so you can make informed decisions with confidence. We talk about the stages of labor, common medical interventions, comfort measures, and your options every step of the way.
Fear often grows from uncertainty. While birth is beautifully unpredictable, understanding the process and knowing your options can replace much of that uncertainty with confidence. My hope is that you and your partner enter your birth feeling prepared—not because you know exactly how your birth will unfold, but because you trust yourselves to navigate whatever comes your way.
As your doula, my goal isn't to tell you how your birth should look. My goal is to walk alongside you, support your choices, provide evidence-based education, and remind you that you are capable of making the decisions that are right for your family.
